• British T.V presenter Jill Dando, 37, is shot dead on the doorstep of her home in Fulham, London.
• The first Welsh Assembly in over 600 years opens in Cardiff.
• Manchester United wins the UEFA Champions League at the Nou Camp stadium, Barcelona, beating Bayern Munich.
• Napster, the music downloading service, debuts.
• The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and NATO sign a peace treaty.
• Lance Armstrong wins his first Tour de France.
• In Rome, Hicham El Guerrouj runs the fastest mile ever recorded, at 3:43.13.
