96.9 Viking FM celebrated its 25th birthday on 17th April 2009 – where does the time go? We are immensely proud to be a part of local life in East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire during this time which has seen huge changes in the area. Viking continues to develop and reflect the lives of the people it serves as we remain your first choice for feel good commercial radio in the region.
I would like to say a big thank you to our loyal listeners and our commercial partners who have made this such a great local radio station that holds so many great memories over the years.

The station started broadcasting from the purpose built studios on Commercial Road in Hull on 17th April 1984 and the first words were spoken by the Managing Director Roger Brooks at 6:55am, the test transmissions had been switched off and Roger said ‘Good Morning... it’s my great thrill and privilege to welcome you to the most exciting event to happen in this area for a long time – the birth of a new radio station... The first song played was ‘Celebration’ by Kool & The Gang.
25 years of local radio at its best! 25 years of local news, sport, big personalities and the best music on the dial for East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire.
Viking has been a real hot bed of talent and many faces have worked at the station over the years – the first breakfast show was hosted by the legend that is Dave Fewster! There was Steve King, Jon Culshaw and Mark Dennison – all big breakfast show names from the 80’s and 90’s and in recent years. Simon Logan, JK & Joel, Simon Hirst, Foxy & Tom, Sam & Mark and the current breakfast show Paul Foster.
