LAST YEAR OVER 800 SCHOOLS MADE 600,000 JOURNEYS BY BIKE OR SCOOTER OVER 15 DAYS FOR THE BIG PEDAL-LETS MAKE IT EVEN MORE THIS YEAR AND SHOW THE REST OF THE UK WHAT EAST RIDING SCHOOLS ARE MADE OF!
The Big Pedal is a giant inter-school cycling competition open to ALL schools in the UK. It takes place over three weeks in March (5-23 March 2012) and schools will follow a virtual route taking them all around the UK.
It works a bit like the Tour de France in that each day of the race is a different stage, taking schools along 15 routes around the UK. Schools record the number of pupils (and staff and parents) that cycle and scooter into school each day, and the more they have the faster their time will be for that day.
There are three categories: small primaries, large primaries and secondary schools. Schools will be ranked for each day of the race and also on a cumulative, overall basis for the whole race. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest schools in each category and also regionally.
The Big Pedal was extremely successful in 2011 with almost 1,000 schools taking part. We are hoping to top this in 2012 and extend the competition even further – East Riding schools will join us!
The Big Pedal is powered by Sustrans and funded by the Bike Hub.
